Dexter-Russell, Inc.
has been a leading manufacturer in the finest cutlery products since 1818. They are still the largest and oldest cutlery manufacturer in the United States. They are the successor of the two oldest cutlery manufacturers in America.

Henry Harrington, a New England craftsman and inventor, started his company in Southbridge, MA in 1818. The Harrington Cutlery Co. made surgical equipment and shoe knives, as well as finely made firearms. In 1884, the company introduced the Dexter line of kitchen and table cutlery which swiftly gained prominence for its quality and dependability in America’s homes and restaurants.

In 1834, another New Englander, John Russell, started the Green River Works on March 1, 1834. A wealthy industrialist, Russell made his fortune in the cotton industry and turned his efforts to manufacturing cutlery products. The factory was built along the banks of the Green River in Greenfield, MA. The company started by making handcrafted chisels and ax heads. As the company gained popularity they expanded to include knives.

On May 1st, 1933, the Harrington Cutlery Company and the John Russell Cutlery Company merged and formed the company Dexter and Russell. The cutlery products ranged from knives that “won the West” to other innovative cutlery products. In 2001, the company changed its name to Dexter-Russell, Inc.
